The role of wolves in ecosystems

An ecosystem without apex predators is a struggling ecosystem, and while wolves can be a potential threat to livestock I feel strongly about finding ways that we can share the dwindling green spaces with these powerful animals. This year I have started to work with @wolfhavenint to pass along parts of the animals that I struggle to find uses for otherwise. I personally love lamb head pozole, but I can only eat so many lamb heads and they are provide wonderful enrichment for the wolves in the car

Did you know wolves are key to a healthy ecosystem? 🐺🌿Often misunderstood, wolves play a vital role in nature. They help control disease, keep prey populations in check, and even shape entire landscapes. As keystone species, their presence supports a rich, balanced web of life. Wolves don’t destroy ecosystems—they help them thrive. #StandForWolves #ProtectWolves | Wolf Conservation Center

Fun fact: January's full moon, known as the Wolf Moon, is named for the wolves' winter howls. And tonight is the night it shines full. 🐺🌕 Few animals evoke the wild like wolves. Majestic, intelligent and highly social, they’re crucial in driving evolution and balancing ecosystems. For years, the Center has been fighting to stop wolf persecution and link isolated populations together, for the sake of wolves themselves as well as for ecosystem rejuvenation on a broader scale. This video gives a rare glimpse into the "fishy" proclivities of wolves in our area. The video was taken in spring just a short distance from a creek wolves have fished at for many years. This past spring was the 10th year we have documented wolves hunting and catching fish—a behavior that had not been documented in boreal systems such as ours until our work, in part, because it is a tough behavior to observe. What is particularly fascinating is that this wolf was not only carrying a fish but ca

🐺 5 Wolf Facts & Their Role in Biodiversity 🌿 1. Wolves regulate prey populations, like deer and elk, preventing overgrazing and helping forests and meadows thrive. 2. Their hunting patterns create carcasses that feed scavengers such as ravens, foxes, and bears. 3. Wolves influence animal behavior, encouraging herbivores to move and graze in healthier ways, which maintains ecosystem balance. 4. They help disperse nutrients through their droppings, enriching the soil and supporting plant growth

Wolves didn't touch the rivers—but they changed them. By altering elk behavior, wolves allowed vegetation to grow back. Willows returned. Beavers came back. Rivers stabilized. This is called a trophic cascade, and it's one of the most famous examples of ecosystem restoration. The 2026 study says the effect was smaller than claimed, but the basic science still holds. Nature is connected. 🐺🌊 #TrophicCascade #WolvesChangeRivers #YellowstoneEcosystem #WolfScience #EcosystemRestoration How wolves c
